- Monthly Community Service Hours: 22
- Spring Semester Community Service Hours: 40
Throughout the month of March, I have been continuing my journey of consistently volunteering with University Medical Center (UMC) in New Orleans, Louisiana. I have remained volunteering in the Emergency and Oncology departments. Through my volunteer experiences, I am continuously granted the opportunity to gain invaluable firsthand experiences in a clinical setting. I have been granted the opportunity to be introduced to real patient interactions and the pace of a variety of clinical environments. Furthermore, I have been able to process how hospitals often operate and how various healthcare riles function for the most efficient patient care. Every time I enter the volunteer space, I am reassured of my passion and purpose in medicine, and I truly enjoy spending time in this space.
Since February’s blog post, we have completed the Psychopharmacology module. Learning more about the underlying mechanisms of mental illness and current therapeutic treatments for these illnesses was especially interesting. Learning how psychological medications affect the brain opens the door to understanding the biological roots of mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. Something that really intrigues me regarding psychopharmacology is the emerging research within the scope, and the fact that personalized medicine is beginning to be explored more for more effective treatments of mental illnesses. My favorite lectures during this module were the Principles lectures given by Dr. Mostany.
Overall, March has been a remarkable month. Academically, I have been granted the opportunity to learn some great information regarding Psychopharmacology and the progression of the field. Professionally, I have gained more knowledge and invaluable experiences within medicine. Personally, through the program, I have been able to do some amazing networking and cultivate some great friendships and connections. As the end of the program is quickly approaching, I am so grateful for all this program has done and is doing for me academically, professionally, and academically.
